Do children need car seats in a cross-border car?
One-line answer: Plan a suitable child restraint for every leg of the journey. Hong Kong's current private-car rule covers a child under 8 who is below 1.35 m; other jurisdictions and vehicle categories can differ. Confirm the exact seat, installation and any fee with the operator in writing.
Regulations

| Hong Kong private car | Under 8 years and below 1.35 m | Transport Department child restraint guidance, effective 1 November 2025 |
| Macau | Confirm current rule for the vehicle and child | Check official Macau traffic guidance |

Liability points
- During an accident, an unrestrained child is not covered in the same way as a properly secured passenger (per most insurance terms)
- Penalties and enforcement depend on the jurisdiction and the applicable vehicle and child-restraint rule; check the current official guidance.
- Drivers may refuse the trip if you arrive without proper restraints (we'll provide them on request — just plan ahead)
FAQ
How early should I request a child seat?
24 h ahead is enough for one seat. For 2+ seats, give 48 h notice.
Do you have rear-facing infant carriers?
Yes — Britax / Cybex / Joie infant capsules suitable for newborns up to 13 months.
Is there a charge for child seats?
First two seats free. Additional seats: HKD 50 each.
Can I use a baby sling / wrap instead of a seat?
No — slings are not legal child restraints and violate HK / Mainland rules. They also offer zero crash protection.
What about during the brief HKZMB disembarkation?
Carry the child or use a stroller. The seat stays in the car; you re-buckle on re-entry.
