Do I have to get out of the car at the border?
One-line answer: At Shenzhen Bay / Huanggang / Liantang / Man Kam To, stay in the car — pass your documents through the window, takes 5–15 min. At HKZMB Bridge you disembark twice (HK port + Zhuhai/Macau port), takes 15–30 min total.
Checkpoint-by-checkpoint
| Checkpoint | Get out? | Typical time | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shenzhen Bay (深圳湾) | No | 10–20 min | One-stop joint inspection |
| Huanggang (皇岗) | No | 15–25 min | 24-hour |
| Liantang / Heung Yuen Wai | No | 10–20 min | Best for Eastern HK ↔ Longgang |
| Man Kam To (文锦渡) | No | 10–15 min | Smaller, less busy |
| Qingmao (青茂) | Walk-through | 10–15 min | New, cargo + passengers |
| HKZMB Bridge | Yes (twice) | 15–30 min | HK port + Macau/Zhuhai port |
Why HKZMB requires getting out
The HKZMB Bridge is a 55-km special route. By design, vehicles transfer through three jurisdictions; biometric (face + fingerprint) checks are required, which can't be done through a car window. You disembark briefly at each port — the driver re-parks and waits.
What in-vehicle clearance actually feels like
- Driver pulls into the inspection lane
- Officer comes to window, collects passports / permits from each passenger
- Officer scans, returns documents (typically 1–3 min for a full Alphard load)
- Driver pulls forward to the next-side check, repeats
- Total stop-time at both sides: 5–15 min
FAQ
Will I be asked to take photos / fingerprints in the car?
Standard checks are document-only at most checkpoints. Random secondary inspection may ask passengers to step out — uncommon (<1% of trips).
What if I have a baby in a car seat — do I need to take them out?
At in-vehicle checkpoints, no. At HKZMB you'll need to bring them through, which is a brief 5-minute walk per port.
Is in-vehicle clearance available 24/7?
Shenzhen Bay 06:30–24:00; Huanggang 24/7; HKZMB 24/7; Liantang 06:30–22:00.
What's the fastest checkpoint for HK ↔ Shenzhen?
Off-peak: Shenzhen Bay (~10 min). Peak Friday evening: switch to Huanggang or Liantang.
Can the driver speed up clearance?
Drivers select the lane and queue position, but cannot bypass officer-side delays. Booking off-peak slots is the only real lever.
