Macau to China Visa for Indian Passport Holders
Can an Indian passport holder enter mainland China from Macau and return to Macau using “144-hour visa-free transit”? No. Indian ordinary passports are not eligible for the current 240-hour transit exemption. A separate 6-day Guangdong group-tour exemption may be an option, but it requires qualifying travel-agency arrangements. A private-car booking alone does not establish eligibility.
This guide covers Macau → Guangdong → Macau for Indian ordinary passport holders. Policy sources were checked on 5 October 2026. CrossBorderHK provides this travel-planning summary; immigration authorities decide admission.

Macau to China visa options for Indians
| Entry option | Indian ordinary passport | What it means for a Macau return trip |
|---|---|---|
| 240-hour visa-free transit, formerly 72/144 hours | Not eligible | Changing the exit to Hong Kong does not fix the nationality restriction |
| 30-day unilateral visa exemption | India is not on the list | Do not assume general “China visa-free” publicity applies |
| Guangdong 6-day tourist-group exemption from Hong Kong or Macau | Potentially eligible under the nationality criterion | A registered travel agency must confirm the group and itinerary arrangements |
| Valid Chinese visa for the intended visit | Subject to the visa's conditions | Check validity, available entries and permitted stay before travelling |

Why Macau-in, Macau-out does not qualify for transit
There are two separate obstacles: India is outside the eligible nationality list, and Macau → mainland China → Macau returns to the same region. Transit requires onward travel to a different country or region. Changing the mainland city or checkpoint does not change that route condition. MTR explains the third-region requirement.
Macau → Guangdong → Hong Kong has a different onward region, but an Indian ordinary passport still does not qualify for 240-hour transit. Do not book a Hong Kong exit solely to obtain that exemption.
The former 72/144-hour transit allowance was extended to 240 hours. This did not replace the separate Guangdong tourist-group policy. Ask which policy an offer labelled “144-hour China visa” actually uses.
The separate 6-day Guangdong group-tour option
The National Immigration Administration describes a regional exemption for ordinary passport holders from countries with diplomatic relations with China, which includes India. Its conditions include:
- Arrival in Hong Kong or Macau first, followed by a tourist group organised by a travel agency registered in either SAR.
- At least two travellers, entering and leaving mainland China together as a group.
- Tourism in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, Zhaoqing, Huizhou or Shantou.
- Entry and exit through open ports in those cities, with a stay of no more than six days, counted from midnight following entry.
The published conditions do not impose the transit policy's third-region requirement. A Macau return itinerary can therefore be assessed under this scheme, but this is not confirmation that a particular agency can arrange it. Obtain confirmation of your exact itinerary and entry arrangements before paying. See NIA's regional policy, section V.
What to confirm before booking a car
Start with your entry arrangement, then plan transport around it. For a Macau hotel → Zhuhai or Guangzhou → Macau hotel trip, ask the organising agency to confirm the travel dates, group membership, permitted stops, entry and exit checkpoints, required documents and latest return time.
Send these details with your transport enquiry:
- Each traveller's passport nationality and passport type, including children.
- Travel dates, group size, mainland cities and overnight stays.
- The purpose of the visit: sightseeing, factory visits, meetings or another activity.
- Whether you already hold a Chinese visa or have confirmed arrangements with a travel agency.
- Macau pickup and return addresses, luggage, child seats and any mobility needs.
Ask for written terms covering agency charges, transport charges, processing time and cancellation or refusal arrangements. This page does not quote a group-tour fee or promise an application turnaround time.
CrossBorderHK can review the transport request. This guide is not an offer of confirmed visa-free group-tour processing. Any such arrangement must be separately confirmed with a qualifying travel agency. If it cannot be arranged, obtain the appropriate Chinese visa before the mainland visit. A car deposit is not an immigration approval.
For vehicle planning, see our Guangzhou–Macau transfer information and passenger document checklist. Check Macau admission and re-entry separately using the Macao government's entry rules; permission to enter Macau does not authorise entry into mainland China.
Ask about transport for your itinerary.
FAQ
Can Indian passport holders use China's 144-hour or 240-hour visa-free transit?
No. Indian ordinary passport holders are not on the current 240-hour transit list. The former 144-hour transit policy is not a separate alternative for them.
Can I enter mainland China from Macau and exit back to Macau?
Not under transit visa-free entry. A valid Chinese visa or confirmed qualifying Guangdong tourist-group arrangements may provide a different basis for the visit. Macau re-entry must also be checked.
Can two Indian travellers qualify for the Guangdong group-tour exemption?
Potentially. Two people meet the minimum group size, but a qualifying travel agency must organise the trip and all other conditions must be met. Simply sharing a private car is insufficient.
Does leaving mainland China for Hong Kong make an Indian passport eligible?
No. A different onward region does not remove the transit policy's nationality restriction. Consider the appropriate visa or a separately confirmed tourist-group arrangement.
Can I visit factories or attend business meetings under the group-tour scheme?
Do not assume so. This regional scheme is for tourism. Disclose business activities and confirm the appropriate entry permission before booking.
Does CrossBorderHK provide the 144-hour visa-free entry service?
This page provides policy information and a transport enquiry option. It does not confirm that CrossBorderHK offers group-tour immigration arrangements. Those require separate confirmation with a qualifying travel agency; booking a car alone does not include them.
Can I use a different checkpoint for the return journey?
Have the organising agency confirm both checkpoints for the specific entry arrangement. Do not assume a car route or a port's inclusion in another visa policy makes it suitable for your trip.
Does visa-free mean the tour and transfer are free?
No. Visa exemption concerns the entry requirement. Transport and travel-agency services may have separate charges, which should be confirmed in writing.
