Macau passport validity: Can you enter with less than 90 days left?
Short answer: you may be refused entry. The Macao SAR Government states that a non-resident's passport, travel document or other accepted document must be valid for the entire intended stay plus at least 90 days. A passport with fewer than 90 days left clearly does not meet the general requirement. Exactly 90 days is normally not enough either if you intend to spend any time in Macao.
Working formula: minimum remaining validity = intended stay in Macao + at least 90 days. A valid visa or visa-free nationality does not replace this passport-validity requirement.
How the Macao 90-day passport rule works
The Macao SAR Government entry requirements say that the document must remain valid for at least 90 days beyond the intended stay. Macao's Public Security Police has also clarified that the general rule is not a universal six-month requirement. A traveller whose document does not meet the minimum validity condition can be refused entry.

Why a valid visa or visa exemption may not be enough
A visa, visa exemption and passport validity are separate entry conditions. Border officers may also check your authorization to enter, purpose of stay, return or onward arrangements and any other legal ground relevant to admission.
This problem often catches travellers who add a Macau day trip while staying in Hong Kong, check only whether the passport has expired, or forget to inspect every adult's and child's document. A confirmed car, ferry, hotel or tour booking is not proof that immigration will admit the passenger.
Which document should Mainland Chinese travellers check?
The answer depends on the document actually used for entry. Mainland residents travelling to Macao for tourism or family visits normally use a valid Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao together with a valid Macao endorsement. Check the permit expiry date, endorsement validity, number of entries and each child's individual documents.
Entry on a PRC passport for transit is a different arrangement. The official Macao immigration FAQ gives a seven-day example: the passport should have at least 97 days left from the entry date, and the traveller must also hold the required visa for a foreign destination and a confirmed air ticket. An ordinary Macao leisure visit should not treat a PRC passport as a substitute for the permit and endorsement.
What to do when your passport is close to expiry
- Count from the planned arrival date in Macao to the passport expiry date.
- Add your full intended stay to the 90-day buffer.
- Check the actual entry document, visa or endorsement, and return or onward evidence.
- Renew before travelling if the document is close to the minimum.
- After renewal, update any flight, ferry, hotel or other booking that contains the old passport number.
- Recheck the official government page on departure day and follow the border officer's decision.
Changing from the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge to a ferry terminal, Hengqin or another checkpoint does not change the traveller's passport-validity requirement. If entry has already been refused, follow the instructions at the checkpoint and resolve the document problem before trying to travel again.
