Hong Kong Airport to Macau Without Hong Kong Immigration

You can only travel from Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) to Macau without clearing Hong Kong immigration if you are an eligible transfer passenger using the SkyPier ferry, and a sailing to Macau is operating that day. Every road option — private car, bus or shuttle bus over the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge — starts after you have entered Hong Kong.

How the SkyPier air-to-sea transfer works

SkyPier is the airport's ferry terminal, inside the restricted area. Passengers arriving by air can go from the arrivals area to the pier without entering Hong Kong.

  1. Check before you fly. Confirm with HKIA and the ferry operator that a sailing to Macau runs on your date and which Macau terminal it serves.
  2. After landing, follow the transfer signs — do not go to Hong Kong immigration.
  3. Buy or collect your ferry ticket at the transfer desk in the arrivals area, before immigration.
  4. Baggage: ask your airline at check-in whether your checked bags can be handled for the ferry transfer, and follow the transfer desk's instructions on arrival.
  5. Board at SkyPier and clear Macau arrival when you land.

HKIA's ferry transfer page says SkyPier is for transfer passengers only and not for passengers starting their trip in Hong Kong. It also notes that the ferry service can be temporarily unavailable and refers travellers to ferry operators for the latest schedule. Treat any third-party timetable as unconfirmed.

Who is eligible — and who is not

Arriving by air at HKG, continuing straight to MacauPossibly, if a sailing operates and you follow the transfer procedure
Already in Hong Kong (hotel, city, after immigration)No — SkyPier is not for trips starting in Hong Kong
Missed the last sailing of the dayNo — you would need to enter Hong Kong and go by road
Large or unusual baggageCheck with the operator first

When the ferry is not an option

If the sailing is suspended, sold out or too late, the alternative is to clear Hong Kong immigration and go by road over the bridge:

For that, you need a document that allows entry to Hong Kong. Many nationalities are visa-free for a short visit; check the Hong Kong visa-free countries guide and the Immigration Department.

Why travellers want to skip Hong Kong immigration

If the first point applies to you, check the SkyPier sailing carefully: without it, you have no road alternative unless you can enter Hong Kong.

FAQ

Can I go from Hong Kong Airport to Macau without a Hong Kong visa?

Only through the SkyPier air-to-sea transfer, if you are eligible and a Macau sailing is running. Road routes over the HZMB require entering Hong Kong.

Where do I buy the SkyPier ferry ticket?

At the ferry transfer desk in the arrivals area, before Hong Kong immigration. Confirm the current arrangement with HKIA and the ferry operator.

Which Macau terminal does the SkyPier ferry go to?

It depends on the operator's current schedule. Check whether it serves the Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal on the Peninsula or the Taipa terminal, as this affects your onward journey to your hotel.

Can I use SkyPier if I stayed in Hong Kong first?

No. HKIA says SkyPier is not for passengers starting their trip in Hong Kong.

Is the HZMB faster than the ferry?

For door-to-door, a private car over the HZMB is often faster because there is no wait for a sailing. But it requires entering Hong Kong. Compare the full journey for your arrival time.

What if I miss the last ferry?

You would need to enter Hong Kong and go by road. The HZMB Hong Kong Port and the shuttle bus run 24 hours, and a private car can be pre-booked for late arrivals.

Need a backup plan?

If the ferry does not fit your arrival, send your flight and hotel. We quote a private car over the HZMB with the vehicle, total price and waiting terms confirmed before booking.
