Macau visa-free countries: passport list and entry rules

Macau visa-free entry depends on your passport: British citizens can receive up to 6 months, four nationalities up to 3 months, many European and other passports up to 90 days, most other listed passports up to 30 days, and Brunei and Kazakhstan up to 14 days. You must also meet passport validity, funds and departure requirements. Immigration decides admission and the actual stay.

Macau visa-free countries and maximum stays

The table groups all 88 nationalities in the government's exemption list by the published visitor stay. Country names are searchable with your browser's Find function. For a document covered by a bilateral agreement, check that agreement as well. The government preserves a separate agreement-based category.

Official exemption list and arrival stay table. Calendar months are kept as months: 3 months is not always 90 days, and 6 months is not always 180 days. The British category is specifically British citizens, not every British nationality status. The US exemption excludes US diplomatic passports. Special, emergency, refugee or stateless documents should be checked individually.

Documents and money to prepare before arrival

Carry a passport accepted by Macau, valid for at least 90 days beyond the planned stay, plus departure evidence. An onward or return ticket is generally required; the official residence-based exception concerns people who can prove residence in mainland China or Hong Kong, with separate restrictions for Chinese and HKSAR passport transit travellers. Keep your accommodation booking, itinerary and permission to enter your next destination available.

The official minimum means of subsistence are:

Planned stayMinimum funds to demonstrate
Up to 7 daysMOP 5,000
More than 7, up to 14 daysMOP 10,000
More than 14, up to 21 daysMOP 15,000
More than 21 daysMOP 20,000

These amounts apply to the traveller's entry assessment; they are not visa fees or a compulsory cash payment at the border. See the official entry conditions and the tourism office entry guidance.

What if your passport is not visa-free?

Being absent from the exemption list does not automatically mean a visa must be obtained before departure. Many visitors may apply for paid Authorization to Enter and Stay on arrival, subject to approval. This is different from visa-free entry.

Ordinary visitors from Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Vietnam must obtain a Macau visa in advance through a Chinese embassy or consulate; do not plan to use the arrival application. Document or status exemptions need separate confirmation. See the Public Security Police application guidance.

Indian, Hong Kong and Chinese travel documents

Indian passports are in Macau's 30-day exemption group. Hong Kong's Indian pre-arrival registration (PAR) is a separate requirement and does not authorize Macau or mainland China entry.

Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card or Re-entry Permit holders appear in a separate Macau category allowing up to one year. Chinese mainland residents generally travel with the appropriate Exit-entry Permit and valid Macau endorsement; a Chinese passport transit arrangement is not an unrestricted tourist exemption. Check the government's document-specific categories rather than applying the foreign-passport table to those travellers.

Hong Kong–Macau–mainland China: check each border

Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China operate separate entry systems. For a Hong Kong–Macau day trip via the bridge or ferry, check your Hong Kong entry permission, Macau eligibility and permission to re-enter Hong Kong. For Macau–Zhuhai or Macau–Shenzhen, check mainland China's exemption or visa before arranging the crossing. Visiting Macau does not create a Chinese visa exemption.

Examples: a US ordinary-passport holder is in Macau's 30-day group but is not on mainland China's general 30-day unilateral list; an Indian ordinary-passport holder qualifies for Macau's listed exemption but not mainland China's 240-hour transit nationality list. A qualifying transit itinerary has additional requirements.

Read the Hong Kong visa-free passport table, mainland China visa-free guide and Indian passport Macau–China guide. Once the immigration requirements are clear, explore Hong Kong–Macau private transfers. Transport reservations do not guarantee admission.

Stay deadlines, repeat visits and longer stays

Check the Authorization to Stay record issued on arrival and leave before its deadline. The nationality table is a maximum, not a guaranteed period. Passport expiry can shorten it. Frequent short-interval entries without a justified purpose can lead to refusal; a border trip does not promise a fresh full stay. For a longer visit, ask Macau immigration about the appropriate authorization or extension before the current permission expires. Visitor entry is not permission to work or reside.

FAQ

Do US, Canadian and Australian citizens need a Macau visa?

Their ordinary passports are in the listed 30-day exemption group. They must still meet the entry conditions. US diplomatic passports are excluded from the US exemption.

How long can British citizens stay in Macau without a visa?

The published maximum is 6 months for British citizens holding a British passport. Preserve the calendar-month wording and follow the deadline actually issued at entry.

Is Macau visa-free for Indian passport holders?

India is listed in the 30-day exemption group. Hong Kong PAR and mainland Chinese visas or exemptions must be assessed separately.

Can I enter Macau with less than six months on my passport?

The general official rule is validity of at least 90 days beyond the intended stay. Check your complete itinerary and airline requirements as well; a passport valid only on the arrival date is insufficient.

Does a Hong Kong or Chinese visa allow entry to Macau?

It does not replace Macau's entry requirements. Check Macau's exemption, visa or arrival authorization rules for your exact travel document and status.
